The Map

The “Map” series is a short experiment triggered by a strange artifact. It is a found object that never ceases to puzzle me. We are looking at a notepad cut out in the shape of the continental United States. The paper is not blank but is made up of parts of a map. The characters on the map are a mixture of English and Korean. Adding to the object's complexity is the fact that the maps show parts of both North and South Korea.

For an object without a known history, it becomes intertwined with a lot of history from the second half of the 20th century. It creates an unresolved tension between signifier and signified if we stay within the field of art critique, but it also speaks somewhat bluntly of current affairs.
